Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a leader in the education of laboratory technologists. Its nationally accredited BioScience Technology program trains highly qualified lab technologists to work in the agbiotech, biomedicine, environment and bioproduct industry clusters.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic serves 26,000 distinct students through applied learning opportunities at campuses in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon, and through extensive distance education opportunities. Programs serve every economic and public service sector. As a polytechnic, the organization provides the depth of learning appropriate to employer and student need, including certificate, diploma and degree programs as well as apprenticeship training. Saskatchewan Polytechnic also engages in applied research, drawing on faculty expertise to support innovation by employers and providing students the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills.

The BioScience Applied Research Centre (BARC) offers state-of-the-art applied research expertise and infrastructure to industry in support of process, product and business innovation.

BARC is home to a team of instructors and research personnel whose strengths include:

• Analytical Chemistry
• Analytical Instrumentation
• Biochemistry
• Microbiology
• Molecular Biology

BARC facilities offer:
• Analytical instrumentation facilities, including GC-MS (Triple Quad), ICP-MS (Triple Quad), Ion Chromatography, HPLC, Capillary Electrophoresis and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy
• Capacity for library construction, PCR, qPCR, image analysis and enzyme kinetics
• Capacity for plant tissue culture, including laminar flow hoods, media preparation areas, tissue culture cabinets, biofermentor and plant growth facilities
• Cell culture facilities, including bio-safety cabinets, incubators and cryopreservation
• Cutting-edge equipment for molecular biology, including isolation, quantization and analysis of DNA, RNA and protein
• Research analysis and documentation, including equipment for image analysis, data integration software and electronic laboratory notebook documentation
• Microbiology capacity, including a Level 2 laboratory facility with media preparation and sterilization area, fermenters, microscopy and incubators
