Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI)

PAMI is a research and development organization that operates on annual revenues of $11 - 12 million, consisting of base-grants (10 - 15%) from the owning provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and contract revenues (85 - 90%) from industry firms and funding agencies. PAMI's roots are in agriculture, but it has expanded to embrace opportunities in transportation, military, and other sectors in industry where its capabilities can add value. PAMI has staff of 75 including animal and crop scientists, engineers, agronomists, technologists, technicians, and administrative staff. PAMI operates out of 3 sites; two in Saskatchewan and one in Manitoba.

Total Number of Employees: 75

Total Number of Researchers: 12

Accreditations:

  • Standards Council of Canada (SCC) - for specific tests, to ISO-17025
  • University Committee on Animal Care and Supply (UCACS) - for research involving livestock
  • British Standards Institute (BSI) - registered quality system to ISO-9001:2008

Capabilities:

PAMI sees agriculture as an opportunity base for production of food, feed, fibre, fuel, and fractions. PAMI has three centres specifically applied to bio-products/fuels, namely:
  • The Crops Processing Centre (CPC) - this centre explores uses for crops, and bi-products by focusing on primary value-added processes.
  • The Applied Bioenergy Centre (ABC) - this centre explores crop materials for use as energy sources, by focusing on field-to-factory, production, and utilization opportunities and issues.
  • Western Beef Development Centre (WBDC) - this centre seeks to maximize profitability of the cow/calf sector, and among other activites it explores use of spent feedstocks from the bio-fuels sector (ex. DDGS) as feed source opportunities for this sector.

Unique Equipment and Resources:

  • Full-scale primary crop processing equipment (hammer mills, driers, sorters, cubers, pelleters) within a flexible processing centre that can be specifically configured to suit client needs.
  • Scaled-up bio-digestors (liquid and solid state) for exploring bio-digestion process parameters and feedstock formulations.
  • Engine and vehicle test cells and on-road test equipment, for exploring use of transportation bio-fuels (this capability through PAMI's affiliation with WESTEST).
  • Combustion Facility (in development) to evaulate and develop bio-mass combustion appliances.
