Ag-West Bio begins new funding contract, appoints new CEO

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan: Ag-West Bio has received continued funding from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture to carry out the activities related to their new three-year strategic plan. A management agreement between Ag-West Bio and Genome Prairie has Wilf Keller taking on the role of president and CEO for Ag-West Bio. Keller will maintain his position of president and CEO at Genome Prairie.

Ag-West Bio and Genome Prairie have a long history of collaboration and cooperation. Ag-West was instrumental in bringing Genome Prairie to Saskatoon, when it restructured in 2005 and relocated its head office from Calgary. Since the move, the two companies have shared office space at Innovation Place Research Park in Saskatoon.

This management agreement provides a new level of efficiency and increased opportunity to take advantage of synergies between the two companies. Both organizations are active in capacity building and promoting the bioscience community in Saskatchewan; however, each has a distinct mandate and will continue to operate with autonomy while maintaining their corporate brands.

Susan Milburn, Ag-West Bio’s Board Chair, says the timing is right for this change, as Ag-West begins implementation of its new strategic plan. “We first want to thank Ian McPhadden, who has lent a steady hand to Ag-West over the past 16 months as interim CEO. Our arrangement with Wilf Keller, who will provide strong leadership for execution of our strategic plan, will set Ag-West on a continued path of excellent service to the ag-bioeconomy community in Saskatchewan.”

McPhadden says he is confident this is a good move for the organization. “Wilf has the history, the connections and the skill set that will help the company fulfill its mandate to make Saskatchewan the most vibrant ag-bioeconomy in the country.”

Keller, a well-known and respected leader in Saskatchewan’s bio-community, says he is looking forward to the new arrangement between the two companies. “Genome Prairie is pleased to continue working with Ag West to build and promote Saskatchewan’s bioscience sector.”

Workshop aims to promote Canada’s biodiesel industry

Saskatoon, SK – Farmers and scientists will work side by side today, learning the intricacies of making biodiesel at a workshop hosted by Ag-West Bio at Innovation Place.

During the workshop, facilitated by Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI), participants will see biodiesel being produced in The Flower Power biodiesel demonstration trailer and even make a small batch of biodiesel. The course not only teaches the chemistry behind biodiesel production; participants learn about safety precautions, insurance issues, feedstock sources and the economics of production.

Zenneth Faye, Executive Manager of Milligan Bio-Tech, is the guest speaker in the afternoon.

Rex Newkirk, Director of Research and Business Development for CIGI, says there are a number of reasons his organization is teaching individuals how to make biodiesel. Number one, he says, is to help the industry achieve the 550 million litre/year mandate introduced by the federal government. “The federal mandate calls for 550 million litres of biodiesel per year. Right now, we make only about 110 million litres (per year). My fear is that if we can’t produce enough, the mandate could disappear.”

Producers stand to benefit from biodiesel, but there has been negative media and misinformation about the safety and value of the fuel. “The more people learn about the process, the more supportive they are of the product and the industry,” says Newkirk.

Ag-West Bio congratulates member companies Bio-Extraction Inc. and Mustard Capital Inc. for winning ABEX Awards

Saskatoon, SK: Bio-Extraction Inc (Bio-Exx) and Mustard Capital Inc. (MCI) were each announced winners at the ABEX (Achievement for Business Excellence) Awards banquet in Saskatoon on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Milligan Bio-Tech was an ABEX finalist. All three companies are members of Ag-West Bio.

MCI captured the Achievement for Business Excellence Award for Exports (sponsored by the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership). MCI operates a dry mustard milling facility in Gravelbourg, SK. Since opening in 2007, MCI has sold a full range of mustard-ingredient products, including de-oiled mustard flour, bran and extracted oil, to 15 countries and is targeting selected markets in Asia and the Middle East for market expansion in 2009-10. The company is Kosher certified, and certified organic by OCIA.

Bio-Exx took home the “Technology in Action” New Saskatchewan Product Award (sponsored by the Saskatchewan Research Council). Bio-Exx is developing and commercializing a low temperature oil extraction and protein isolation system that allows for the separation and sale of very high value protein isolates from canola.

“It is a great honour to be recognized in our community among so many other excellent Saskatchewan companies,” said Laurence Parslow, General Manager and Director of R&D. “We are very excited about the new canola-based protein products that we are bringing to market. We look forward to continued success working with some of the best minds and research organizations in the industry here in Saskatchewan.” The company has invested over $15 million in Saskatchewan for the development of a processing plant in Saskatoon, which began operations in March of 2009. Bio-Exx is planning to invest an additional $20 million over the next 6-9 months and is creating approximately 40 new jobs at its plant in Saskatoon.

Milligan Bio-Tech was nominated for the ABEX Job Creation Award. Since production began in 2001 in Foam Lake, SK, Milligan Bio-Tech has grown at a tremendous rate, nearly doubling its sales every year. Using non-food grade canola, the company manufactures biodiesel and biodiesel-related products that meet or exceed US and European quality standards.

Recognizing the potential of these organizations, Ag-West Bio assisted them in overcoming some of the hurdles faced by start-up companies, along with providing seed capital through its commercialization fund.

“Introducing new products to international markets requires a lot of support,” says MCI CEO Tom Halpenny, “We often found ourselves drawing on the resources of Ag-West Bio to identify key partners for the new innovative mustard based products we are presenting to diversify our presence in the market.”

Ag-West Bio president & CEO Ian McPhadden, says, “I would like to extend a big congratulations to our member companies on behalf of Ag-West Bio. This is a terrific example of the potential of innovation in Saskatchewan – great ideas followed through with typical Saskatchewan hard work. Ag-West Bio believes seed funding can help generate long-term economic growth in Saskatchewan’s bioeconomy.”

Ian McPhadden: a new shine on Ag-West Bio

Ian McPhadden, the new President and CEO at Ag-West Bio Inc. as of January 6th, has been involved in developing Saskatchewan’s bio-economy for many years. His service on Ag-West Bio’s board of directors gives him a great deal of insight and plenty of ideas – which he plans to explore in his new role.

“I’m fascinated by biotechnology and I’ve met so many interesting people in my years of involvement with Ag-West Bio. This organization has been recognized on an international scale for work it has done in the past. I hope to put a new shine on Ag-West.”

Ian’s past experience will serve him well at Ag-West Bio. After studying agriculture and geology at the University of Saskatchewan, he worked as a geologist for a number of years, until the opportunity came for him to take over the family farm. He took it and ran a successful grain operation until his retirement in 2006.

Even with the busy life of a farmer, his activities extended well beyond his fence line. In 1988, Ian was selected as one of Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers, and later served as chairperson for the national organization. In 1990, he was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship to study and report on farming practices in Australia and Europe. He is now a director with the Canadian Nuffield Association. He served as interim CEO for Prairie Malt and has been involved in numerous producer groups, including the Pulse Growers and Canola Growers Associations. For over 25 years, Ian has hosted students from around the world through the International Agriculture Exchange Association (IAEA).

Ian has the support of another well-known and respected Ag-West board member, Pete Desai, who will assist him in developing the company’s strategic plan. After retiring from Dow AgroSciences Canada Inc., Pete started Desai & Desai, a consulting company with a focus on developing strategies, business and research collaborations for agricultural biotechnologies and their applications. Pete serves on a broad range of ag-biotech related boards, including the U of S Crop Development Centre Advisory Board, Genome Prairie, NRC-PBI and the Alberta Agriculture Research Institute.

Retirement from farming doesn’t mean slowing down for Ian. He is pleased to be a player in this game during these exciting times in Saskatchewan. As a farmer, he realizes the value of research to the farming profession and the great potential it offers our resource-based province to gain returns from its natural resources.

He believes Ag-West Bio is set to be a major player in the development of the bio-economy. “The business opportunities in the life sciences sector are rapidly growing and we plan to take full advantage of the strengths in this province to develop the bio-economy to its potential. We have creative and knowledgeable people at Ag-West Bio, with a singular goal – to make Saskatchewan the leader in Canada’s bio-economy.”

Saskatchewan, Canada’s New Leader in Economic Growth,Delivers Innovation Leadership at BIO 2008

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Booth #4325 - June 17, 2008 —Saskatchewan’s message at this year’s BIO International Convention in San Diego is that innovation is the province’s most competitive and sustainable advantage in life sciences.

To drive home this message, Saskatchewan, with the fastest economic growth rate in Canada and the largest agricultural biotechnology sector, has adopted one of the smallest foot prints possible at the world’s largest biotechnology event of the year.

“Saskatchewan’s bio-economy speaks to both the minutiae and magnitude of life.

By working with life’s smallest building blocks, Saskatchewan is contributing important bio innovations that contribute to life’s big picture,” said Dale Botting, Deputy Minister of Saskatchewan Enterprise and Innovation.

In the last decade, the number of life sciences companies in Saskatchewan has tripled from 19 to 57 and employment in the field has more than doubled. In addition, Saskatchewan companies continue to generate Canada’s best ratio of bioproducts in the market to bioproducts in development.

“The growing community of agricultural biotechnology startups in Saskatchewan is a testament to the province’s strong and varied research infrastructure,” said Perry Lidster, Ag-West Bio Inc’s president and chief executive officer.

Key Innovations

1. Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLS) – Saskatoon, SK is home to Canada’s only synchrotron. Its BioMedical Imaging beamline is the most advanced in the world. The beamline is expected to evolve as a gold standard to which the medical imaging community will aspire and eventually adopt as a universal standard.

2. Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) - VIDO has developed five world animal vaccines and holds patents on 60 more. VIDO’s expertise extends to human disease since more than 75 per cent of new diseases found in humans originate in animals.

VIDO’s International Vaccine Centre currently being built will focus on vaccine development for both animal and human pathogens. The centre will be the first of its kind in the world and will include a bio-safety Level 3 high-containment testing facility for large animals.

3. Saskatchewan Research Council has designed a number of vehicles that are world firsts in alternative energy. One such vehicle is a tractor fuelled solely by hydrated ethanol which has caught the attention of government and tractor manufacturers in India.

4. University of Saskatchewan Toxicology Centre - is the largest and most sophisticated aquatic toxicology research facility in Canada. The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Toxicology at the University of Saskatchewan is the fastest growing toxicology program in Canada.

5. Agricultural Biotechnology – Recently, Saskatchewan was responsible for identifying an unknown gene that helps plants resist stress.

Agbiotech is Saskatchewan’s niche. Given that Saskatchewan is home to 44 per cent of Canada’s cultivated farmland, it’s not surprising that it is also home to one third of the country’s ag biotech industry.

About Ag-West Bio Inc.
Ag-West Bio Inc. is a member-based organization responsible for initiating, promoting and supporting the growth of Saskatchewan’s agricultural bio-industries, including the commercialization of food and non-food related technologies. The non-profit organization’s investments have resulted in approximately $760 million directed toward Saskatchewan’s GDP.

go-BiO
website goes live today!

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan:  Today at the Canadian Renewable Energy Workshop (CREW) at IPSCO Place in Regina, Ag-West Bio Inc. launches www.go-BiO.ca, the one-stop on-line information tool to identify and connect with Saskatchewan individuals, companies and organizations involved in bioproducts, biofuels and bioprocessing in the province.

Go-BiO allows Saskatchewan-based industry participants (research and development to producers to service and equipment suppliers) to enter relevant information into the database advising others of their existence and willingness to do business.  “The go-BiO site enables those from outside the province to easily connect with Saskatchewan-based contacts in the areas of research and development, production, financing, supplies and other contract services,” says Ron Kehrig, Ag-West Vice President responsible for the development of go-BiO.  “The researchable database showcases our provincial capacity and allows participants the opportunity to create new connections and partnerships, expanding business beyond our borders.  We want those with a presence ‘on the ground’ in Saskatchewan to get their information into the database and we want those from outside the province to see just what great contacts exist in the province and can help them move the industry forward.”

Saskatchewan has a wealth of raw materials; however, those from outside the province don’t always realize that a vibrant bioenergy and biotechnology cluster exists here.  Funding for the go-BiO awareness project was provided by Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan Inc. (ACS) through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Canadian Adaptation and Rural Development in Saskatchewan (CARDS) program.  Funding support was also received from Industry Canada to allow the go-BiO site to serve as a prototype for other areas and organizations within Canada.  Support for Ag-West Bio is provided in part by the Ministry of Agriculture in Saskatchewan.
