Federal/Provincial Agri-Innovation Programs Workshop
On Friday, Dec. 4, over 100 people attended an information session of
federal and provincial Agri-Innovation Programs. Ag-West Bio organized
the workshop, presented by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and
Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.
Alanna Koch, Deputy Minister of Agriculture for Saskatchewan, provided
an overview of the Ministry of Agriculture, its strategic direction and
its priorities. Ms. Koch emphasized the importance of government
departments acting as “one government,” working together as a cohesive
unit to address issues that affect agriculture. She pointed out that a
priority for the government is to create an attractive business climate
for the agriculture industry, including the infrastructure that will
support business development. By investing in agricultural research and
development, the provincial government hopes to achieve a sustainable
agriculture sector that promotes growth and investment while protecting
natural resources.
Government-funding program managers presented information on the new
Growing Forward program, as well as existing federal and provincial agri-innovation
programs available to the agriculture, agri-food, and agri-based
products industry. Presenters were Clair Gartley, Dean Vey, Laurie
Dmytryshyn, Abdul Jalil, Alison Demeria and Brendan Reding.
Participants included researchers, companies, ag-industry associations,
academic institutions, and producers. The seminar showed potential
applicants the suite of federal and provincial programs available to
assist in the product innovation cycle - from concept, to research, to
commercialization. Lunchtime gave participants a chance to network, and
an opportunity to meet and speak with the program managers.
